Middle school Shakespeare enthusiasts Alexandra and Chloe decide to start a theater club, and Hamlet will be their first project. Bossy Alexandra will play Hamlet (obviously), which leaves aspiring actress Chloe with every other character. Not interested in playing Hamlet's spurned love interest, Chloe enlists an innocent classmate, who is conveniently named Ophelia, to play her namesake. Deciding to never break character as an "exercise," the girls' vague romances and less vague resentments cause their adolescent drama to spiral dangerously out of control.

Published Reviews

"...a bracing satire of teen speak, pop culture and the Bard himself."

Nina Metz, The Chicago Tribune

"On the surface there is explosive humor and underneath there is the heartbreaking reality of pre-adolescent emotional chaos."

Venus Zarris, Chicago Stage Review

"...the play ignites questions of betrayal, love, loss, and blame, and will leave you thinking of William Shakespeare's Hamlet -- and your own life choices -- in a brand new light!"

Delaney Gibson, The Plog

"I was drawn immediately into the world of this play and I was emotionally moved by it. Hamlettes is definitely worth seeing -- whether you are a tween, teen, or an adult."

David Fuller, nytheatre.com

"Whether you know the source material or not (come on, you know it), Hamlettes will capture your fancy."

Christopher Diercksen, New York Theater Review
