It’s a well worn cliché that art can be like a child, in which case adaptation seems a little like adoption. The playwright finds a play—sent along the river in a bulrush basket by Beckett or Austen or whoever—and raises it as her own. Often the adopting adapter gives the play with a new set of values or quirks; the conceptual DNA of the play remains the same but the play grows in new directions.
