“SEX a.k.a. Wieners and Boobs”

David Wain, Michael Showalter, and Joe Lo Truglio are, as any good comedy nerd will tell you, comedy legends. They are the men behind the 2001 camp cult film, Wet Hot American Summer, which, directed by Wain and written by Wain/Showalter, boasts a cast that includes Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, Chris Meloni, Janeane Garofalo, and Molly Shannon to name a few. Wain, Showalter, and Lo Truglio met as college students at NYU, where they formed the sketch comedy group The State. The State spawned the popular MTV show of the same name (which ran from 1993-1995), and later on, the critically acclaimed Comedy Central show Stella. The three write books (Mr. Funnypants), do stand-up, and act in blockbuster movies (Superbad, I Love You Man, Role Models, etc).

David Wain, Michael Showalter, and Jo Lo Truglio also happen to be the playwrights behind Playscripts’ own SEX a.k.a. Wieners and Boobs. The play tells the story of new sheriff Jack Greenberg’s struggle to root out corruption (“hookers and gigolos”) from the town of Teaneck, New Jersey. It’s no easy task for Jack, as he deals with the apathy of the mayor and townspeople and the outright threat of crime boss Tad Theaterman. When Jack meets Hillary, a recent divorcee, it’s love at first sight, but as a showdown between Jack and Tad approaches, Jack will be forced to make a choice between love and justice.

The absurdist, stupid-smart brand of comedy that David Wain, Michael Showalter, and Joe Lo Truglio helped pioneer is in full force in SEX a.k.a. Wieners and Boobs. The plot, which is a spoof on shoot-’em-up Westerns, is loose and functions as a pretense to lampoon the traditional conventions of theater. It’s also an excuse to just act silly on stage. The over the top elements in the play, such as the musical interludes, improvised segments, and the addition of a full scene from the movie Glengarry Glen Ross, break up the story and make the play virtually unstageable. This is a large part of the fun; as the playwrights write in the author’s note, “The spirit of SEX a.k.a. Wieners and Boobs should very much be like young kids doing a show for their parents and friends in the living room. Silly, fun, and self-amusing.”

SEX a.k.a. Wieners and Boobs is not all pointless fun though. The writing is knowing (the play makes frequent references to theater and other playwrights) and meant to critique the seriousness of theater. A good example of this is the cast question and answer session that takes place before the “show” begins. The cast takes questions from plants in the audience about the show that has not yet been performed. The responses vary from self-congratulating platitudes to nonsensical rants. The inclusion of an old-timey narrator character is another example of the self-awareness present in SEX a.k.a. Wieners and Boobs. The narrator, a rambling stereotype of a hillbilly, often breaks the fourth wall and even stops midway through the show to have a drink with the artistic director.

SEX a.k.a. Wieners and Boobs is a joy to read, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in comedy. David Wain, Michael Showalter, and Joe Lo Truglio are talented and prolific writers with a unique point of view. Michael Showalter best sums up the comedic sensibility that this play so perfectly embodies: “I like silly things. I think that ‘silly-stupid’ or ‘stupid-smart’ might be my philosophy, which is to combine a veneer of intelligence with an undercurrent of crass stupidity.”
