| Three Playscripts One-Acts Among America's Top 10 Most-Produced | ||

| Three one-act plays published by Playscripts, Inc. were among the most-produced titles in American high schools during the 2001-02 school year, the International Thespian Society recently announced. Rapunzel Uncut by Mariah Everman reached the coveted #2 spot on the Top 10 list for one-acts, while Hard Candy by Jonathan Rand made #3, and Cut by Ed Monk tied for #7. The survey results represent a meteoric triumph for Ms. Everman's play, which became available for production only at the beginning of the 2001-02 season, and rapidly rose above scores of more traditional favorites. Ms. Everman, whose fairy-tale spoof was a Thespian Playworks winner in 2001, currently studies playwriting at the University of Wyoming. Ed Monk, a high school theater teacher in Northern Virginia, wrote Cut in 1990 as a comedy for his students to perform at state competitions. Ten years later, the hilarious play-within-a-play-within-a-play received a production at the 2000 International Thespian Festival, where it was seen and picked up by Playscripts. Jonathan Rand's office comedy Hard Candy, which was a Thespian Playworks winner in 1998, reached the #6 spot on the Top 10 list the next year, and has held steady at #3 ever since. The play's popularity inspired Jonathan and his brother Douglas to found Playscripts, with the goal of creating a more effective and accessible platform for new plays. This year's play survey underscores the success of that mission. Playscripts' unique online promotions allow high school teachers and students to read lengthy samples of every play for free, which strongly encourages experimentation with new work by lesser-known authors. Thus it is that Playscripts, a company only two and a half years old, has more plays on the Top 10 list than any of America's three largest and oldest play publishers, which have been around for as long as 170 years.
