PLAYSCRIPTS, INC., the play publishing house that is run by two Thespian Playworks alumni and that carries nine Playworks finalist scripts in its catalog, has signed on as a corporate sponsor of the student writing program. Playscripts, Inc. (www.playscripts.com) is run by brothers Douglas and Jonathan Rand, whose plays The Idiot and the Oddity (Doug, 1994) and Hard Candy (Jonathan, 1998) were finalists in the Playworks program. "As co-founders of Playscripts, Inc., Jonathan and I recognize that Thespian Playworks profoundly nurtured our early playwriting impulses, and in many ways helped to inspire our company," Doug Rand said in announcing the sponsorship commitment. "We're pleased to be part of its continuing success." The company will also be adding some new Playworks titles to its catalog this fall. Rand said Playscripts, Inc. has made offers of publication to all five of the 2003 Playworks finalists. Three of the plays were under contract as this issue went to press. Playworks is a ten-year-old student writing program for members of the International Thespian Society that is operated by the staff of Dramatics. Each year several playwrights (typically four, this year five) are invited to participate in a week of script development workshops at the Thespian Festival, with their expenses, except for transportation, covered by ITS. Submissions are now being accepted for the 2004 Playworks program.
