Our mission is to rejuvenate the old system of play publishing, which tends to be inefficient, conventional, and geographically biased.
- The Traditional System:
- The publisher selects a play based on restrictive notions of marketability, often requiring a production in New York City. The few plays that get chosen for publication are crammed into a dense catalog, with very little additional marketing. Readers pore over hundreds of synopses, understandably reluctant to pay book and shipping fees for a play they may never have read or seen. The playwright seldom hears any news from the publisher, and the same handful of famous plays gets performed over and over again.
- The Playscripts System:
- Playscripts selects a play based on its excellence and theatricality, without such conventional definitions of what is marketable. The plays we choose for publication appear in both our print catalog and our online catalog (www.playscripts.com), which is instantly searchable by genre, length, cast size, gender breakdown, etc. Text samples of each play appear online in an encrypted, read-only format, secured against printing and copying/pasting. This online text allows readers to make decisions based on the merit of the play itself, without incurring a cost until they are ready to order books and/or performance rights. Through our unique Playwright Information Center, each playwright enjoys instant online access to full sales information, production details, and anticipated revenue.

Once we select a play for publication, our core services include:

Constant marketing through targeted catalog mailings, print ads, theater festivals, and the Playscripts website
Playscripts provides these services in return for an exclusivity agreement with the playwright, including a share of the revenue from performance royalties and book sales. |

We do NOT charge reading fees, listing fees, or any other kind of author fees -- Playscripts does not demand any payment from the playwright.
We do NOT allow access to unprotected text over the internet -- all online script samples are encrypted against printing.
We do NOT lay claim to the author's copyright -- the playwright always retains copyright in his or her own name. |
