| Fifteen-year-old Sylvia, newly arrived in the United States from Mexico with her mother, dreams of becoming a doctor. But dreams rarely come easy, especially when you've just been plunged into a new culture and your parents believe fiercely that family always comes first. With the help of a generous ESL teacher, her lovable aunt, and a Cambodian classmate with a dream of his own, Sylvia learns that hard work can take you almost anywhere. This moving journey explores themes of balancing independence with family and features original songs. |
