Since its founding in 1963, the Guthrie Theater of Minneapolis has pioneered the American regional theater movement, bringing to life both the traditional classical repertoire and a diverse body of new works.
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Joe Dowling, the theater has initiated a New Play/New Translation Program, and in the past two years the Guthrie has worked with more than 60 writers. One of the new projects, funded by the Bush Foundation, will send playwrights to any location they choose in the world, and then bring them back to write full-length plays for the Guthrie Theater.
The theater also has a unique acting conservatory program -- A Guthrie Experience for Actors in Training -- and commissions ten-minute plays every summer for the students to rehearse with writers in residence. The playwrights are a mix of emerging and established writers from across America, and their ten-minute plays from 2001, 2002, and 2003 are now published by Playscripts, Inc.
The Guthrie Theater has also commissioned one-act plays from professional playwrights to facilitate high school productions of new work and to encourage professional playwrights to create challenging and age-appropriate comedies and dramas for teenage actors. The Guthrie Theater has worked with The Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis to develop these 30-minute one-act plays, so that the plays are appropriate for theatre festivals, school productions and classroom studies. This one-act commissioning program is part of a larger new play and educational outreach program at the Guthrie Theater.
